Uttar Pradesh Floods Result in 56 Deaths and Extensive Damage

Heavy rainfall in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh from September 25 to the morning of September 27 resulted in 66.5 mm of rain, significantly above the normal 7.6 mm for the period. This led to 56 fatalities, 46 injuries, and damage to over 1,000 houses, as reported by Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod, the state’s relief commissioner.

In Nepal, authorities warned of possible flash floods in 49 out of 77 districts, with Shanti Mahat from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority indicating that areas previously affected by floods were not currently high-risk. Power supply was disrupted in the Manang, Mustang, Myagdi, and Baglung districts, with efforts underway to restore electricity.

Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, the Water Resources and Energy Minister, noted that flooding of the Rahuganga River damaged infrastructure related to a 40-megawatt hydropower project. Additionally, telecommunications were affected due to damage to optical fibers and power supplies, as stated by Nepal’s Communications Minister, Bikram Timilsinha.
