Himalayan Floods Claim 734 Lives in Nepal, 2,498 Missing

The floods in the Himalayan region have led to a reported death toll of 734 in Nepal, with an additional 2,498 individuals currently missing and 7,514 rescued. The Nepal disaster authority indicated that rescue efforts have been hampered by adverse weather conditions, prompting rescuers to move to higher ground.

The Trishuli River's water levels have risen, causing concerns for residents and rescue workers. Operations have been repeatedly suspended due to fears that a lake, formed by a glacier collapse across the Nepal-China border, could lead to further flooding.

Although the lake had mostly drained by Saturday evening, drones identified a new landslide 2.8 kilometers downstream, creating a fresh dam and pool of water. Lok Bahadur Chhetri, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, stated that Nepal's rescue efforts are now focused on individuals believed to be trapped in tunnels at hydropower plants.

Nepal does not require general foreign assistance but seeks help with tunnel rescues, DNA testing, refrigerated body storage, and forensic identification of decomposed remains.
