Catholic Bishops Call for Fasting and Prayers for 2027 Elections

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has urged dioceses and parishes nationwide to engage in civic education, voter mobilization, fasting, and prayers in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This directive was issued in a communiqué signed by the CBCN President, Archbishop Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso of Kaduna, and Secretary, Bishop Peter Olukayode Odetoyinbo of Abeokuta Diocese, following their Second Plenary Meeting for 2026, held from September 10 to 18 at the Our Lady and St. Kizito Pastoral Centre in Osogbo, Osun State.

The bishops called for end-of-month fasting and prayer, alongside Rosary processions, from October to December 2026, and declared December 8, 2026, as a special national day of prayer and fasting for the elections' success. They encouraged citizens to vote responsibly and study the pastoral letter on the elections.

The bishops also addressed broader national issues, including insecurity, poverty, and governance, urging for improved socio-economic conditions and cooperation with security agencies.
