CCDI President Critiques Gumi's Khamenei Tribute

Olufemi Aduwo, the President of the Coalition of Concerned Democratic Individuals (CCDI), strongly criticized Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi for his recent tribute to Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Aduwo described Gumi's remarks as profoundly misguided and potentially inflammatory, portraying Khamenei as a symbol of justice while ignoring his record of repression and destabilizing foreign policies.

Gumi reportedly eulogized Khamenei, who was killed on February 28, 2026, during a joint U.S.-Israeli airstrike in Tehran, referring to him as a martyr whose death inspired transformation across the Muslim Ummah. However, Aduwo maintained that such romanticized rhetoric overlooks Khamenei's 37-year reign characterized by authoritarianism.

He emphasized that Khamenei's leadership has faced long-standing accusations from Western governments regarding Iran's support for non-state actors in the Middle East. Aduwo warned that celebrating Khamenei's legacy risks whitewashing Iran's record as a state sponsor of terror and could embolden extremist sentiments beyond the Middle East, including in Nigeria.

He called for closer scrutiny of statements made by influential religious figures and urged the government and international partners to commit to countering authoritarian influence.
