Ceferin Rules Out FIFA Bid, Challenges Infantino's Leadership

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin announced on The Rest is Politics podcast that he will not seek the FIFA presidency, currently held by Gianni Infantino. Ceferin cited his love for UEFA and a desire to enjoy life as reasons for his decision.

He indicated that Infantino's position is precarious due to mounting pressure from various football federations following Infantino's controversial proposal to introduce private investment into FIFA tournaments. The FIFA Congress is scheduled to take place in Morocco in March, where Infantino may face a challenger if he opts for re-election.

Ceferin mentioned two scenarios: Infantino could recognize his lack of support from the football community or proceed to elections with a potential opponent. Possible challengers include CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani and Asian Football Confederation chief Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim al-Khalifa.

Ceferin has not communicated with Infantino since the controversy began, highlighting the shift in support for Infantino since he became FIFA president in 2016.
