Nigeria Announces 2026 Children's Day Theme on Inclusion

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially announced the theme for the 2026 Children's Day, which will focus on inclusion and family strengthening. This announcement was made by the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman Ibrahim, during a ceremony in Abuja.

The 2026 celebration aligns with President Bola Tinubu's declaration of the year as one dedicated to family social development. Ibrahim underscored the government's commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind, regardless of their ability, disability, socioeconomic background, religion, or ethnic and geographic location.

She highlighted that children constitute 40% of Nigeria's population and that their development and protection are central to the nation's progress. UNICEF Nigeria's Chief Child Protection, Mona Aika, called for stronger actions to protect children and amplify the voices of adolescent girls, emphasizing the need for policies that reflect their experiences.

The commitment to children's rights aligns with global frameworks, including the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
