China Reaffirms One-China Policy in Nigeria Meeting

During a media briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Dong Hairong, the Counselor of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Nigeria, reaffirmed China's one-China stance and warned against any moves by Nigeria that could be perceived as supporting Taiwan's independence. She reiterated Nigeria's long-standing adherence to the one-China principle, which has been the foundation of diplomatic relations since 1971.

Hairong addressed recent developments, including a visit by Nigerian journalists to Taiwan and discussions about relocating Taiwan's trade office to Abuja. She stressed that Nigeria's commitment to the one-China policy is explicit and non-negotiable.

Furthermore, she highlighted the comprehensive strategic partnership between Nigeria and China, citing a recent handover of a new headquarters for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja, built with Chinese assistance. Hairong also noted that China has implemented a zero-tariff policy for 53 African countries, including Nigeria, to enhance trade relations.
