China-Nigeria Relations Strengthened by One-China Principle

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, represented by Counselor Dong Hairong, underscored the importance of the One-China principle in enhancing bilateral relations with Nigeria during an event organized by the Contemporary China-Africa Research Center. Dong criticized recent diplomatic activities involving Taiwan's leadership, specifically mentioning Taiwanese leader Lai Ching-te's visit to Eswatini, which she deemed contrary to diplomatic norms.

She reaffirmed that Taiwan is an integral part of China, citing historical records and international agreements, including the 1971 United Nations Resolution 2758. Dong commended Nigeria for its consistent support of the One-China principle since establishing diplomatic relations in 1971.

The event also featured discussions led by Professor Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim and others on the economic benefits of Nigeria's partnership with China, particularly in infrastructure projects such as the Abuja-Kaduna and Lagos-Ibadan railways. The seminar concluded with calls for improved media understanding of the One-China principle and stronger collaboration between China and Nigeria in diplomacy, trade, and cultural exchange.
