China Warns Eswatini Against Supporting Taiwan Independence

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has issued a warning to Eswatini and other nations, urging them to stop supporting Taiwan's independence. This statement was made by a spokesperson on Saturday, following the private jet visit of Taiwan's leader, Lai Ching-te, to Eswatini.

The visit is seen as a move that could further strain relations, especially given the historical context of Taiwan's international engagements. The spokesperson criticized Lai's decision to travel abroad shortly after a significant earthquake in Taiwan, suggesting it reflects poorly on his leadership priorities.

The Chinese government reiterated its long-standing position that Taiwan is an integral part of China and accused Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party of colluding with external forces to advance a pro-independence agenda. The statement emphasized that such efforts would not change the broader international consensus regarding Taiwan's status.

Eswatini is currently one of the few African countries maintaining formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, which is increasingly scrutinized by Beijing amid escalating cross-strait tensions.
