China Denies Funding Militias, Illegal Mining in Nigeria

The Chinese government, through its embassy in Nigeria, has rejected allegations that it funds militias and illegal mining activities in Nigeria, labeling these claims as completely baseless. This rebuttal was issued in response to a bill introduced in the U.S.

Congress, titled the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2026, sponsored by Republican lawmakers Rilei Moor, Chris Smith, Bill Huizenga, Brian Mast, and Mario Diaz-Balart. The bill aims to address religious freedom issues and intensifies scrutiny of China's involvement in Nigeria's mining sector, linking it to allegations of illegal mining activities and terrorism financing.

The Chinese authorities emphasized that Chinese companies are required to comply strictly with Nigerian laws and expressed deep dissatisfaction with what they termed false accusations. They reiterated their commitment to supporting local communities, protecting the environment, and contributing to bilateral cooperation and employment in Nigeria.

The Chinese Embassy also affirmed its respect for Nigeria's sovereignty and support for efforts to strengthen mining governance.
