U.S. Proposes Bill to Combat Chinese Mining in Nigeria

The U.S. Congress has proposed a bill aimed at countering Chinese illegal mining operations in Nigeria, which are reportedly a primary revenue source for violent extremist groups, particularly Fulani militias.

Co-sponsored by Rep. Rilei Moor from West Virginia and Rep.

Chris Smith from New Jersey, the bill addresses concerns regarding security implications of these mining activities. It includes provisions for the U.S.

Secretary of State to determine if certain Fulani militias qualify as foreign terrorist organizations. The legislation also calls for humanitarian aid delivery through faith-based non-governmental organizations and suggests technical support for the Nigerian government to reduce violence from armed Fulani militias, including disarmament programs.

Furthermore, the bill proposes measures such as visa bans and asset freezes against individuals and groups allegedly involved in religious freedom violations and extremist activities in Nigeria.
