Chinua Achebe Airport in Anambra State Records 8,624 Flights Since Inauguration

Chinua Achebe Airport, formerly known as Anambra International Cargo Airport in Umunri, Anambra State, has witnessed a total of 8,624 flights since its official inauguration on December 7, 2021. The airport, conceptualized during the tenure of former Governor Chief Willie Obiano, is currently managed by the Chief Executive Officer, Martin Nwafor. Nwafor revealed that the airport has been operational, handling both commercial and private flights, serving over 600,000 passengers. The facility experienced heightened activity during peak seasons like Christmas and received commendations for its operations under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

Efforts are underway to further upgrade the airport, including the completion of the fire service unit with three new fire trucks to enhance safety measures. Governor Soludo has also initiated improvements such as replacing vandalized lights and providing water trucks for renovations. The airport aims to achieve a Category 9 status in the coming years. The current makeshift departure hall is set to be upgraded with a ceiling to improve passenger comfort. These developments are expected to boost state revenue and enhance infrastructure in Anambra State.
