FCT RUWASSA Warns Against Open Defecation to Prevent Cholera

The Federal Capital Territory Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (FCT RUWASSA) has issued a warning to residents against open defecation in bushes and uncompleted buildings to prevent potential cholera outbreaks, particularly during the rainy season. Dr. Joyce Chinyere Echoke, the Executive Director of FCT RUWASSA, stated that such practices are unhealthy and pose risks due to the presence of reptiles in these areas.

She urged residents to adopt hand washing practices to reduce the transmission of diseases. FCT RUWASSA has initiated sensitization and awareness campaigns across 62 wards, focusing on promoting proper sanitation and hygiene.

A recent campaign at Wuse Market targeted transport operators, commuters, and traders, emphasizing the importance of using designated toilet facilities. Mallam Hussaini Abdulkadir, Head of Community Mobilisation and Hygiene Promotion, highlighted the necessity of adhering to sanitation laws and the critical role of toilets in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
