NCDC Warns Cholera Outbreak Not Over Despite Decline

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) reported a significant decline in cholera cases but cautioned that the outbreak is ongoing. NCDC Director-General, Dr Jide Idris, stated on Friday that over 65,000 suspected cholera cases have been reported across 35 states and approximately 195 local government areas since the start of the year.

Although the death rate among reported cases is lower than last year, Idris emphasized that the outbreak is not over and warned of potential increases in cases between late August and October due to the rainy season and flooding, which can contaminate water sources. He noted that early treatment has improved survival rates, particularly in Borno State, where most cases have occurred.

However, Idris stressed that treatment alone cannot stop the spread of cholera, highlighting unsafe drinking water, open defecation, and poor sanitation as key factors. He urged continued investment in water, sanitation, and hygiene to prevent future outbreaks.
