Church Support for Peter Obi Influences 2023 Elections in South East Nigeria

Rev. Chika Ubani shed light on Senator Orji Uzor Kalu's victory in the 2023 Abia North Senatorial election, attributing it to the church's support for Peter Obi over Bola Tinubu in the presidential poll.

The cleric highlighted that the church's backing of Obi influenced the election outcome in the South East region, leading to a strong showing for Obi in Abia and other states. The church's unified position in mobilizing votes for Obi made it challenging for political leaders in the zone, including Kalu, to sway votes towards the APC presidential candidate.

Despite reports questioning Kalu's convincing win, the cleric emphasized that Kalu's political strength and grassroots support were key factors in his victory. The church's opposition to the APC's Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in 2023 resulted in a split vote among voters, with the clergy advising members to vote for Obi for president and Kalu for senator based on conscience.

Ubani dismissed claims of the Labour Party mobilizing support for Tinubu in the South East, citing growing cooperation among key political figures in Abia State.
