CITAD Introduces dComms and DANCIT for Digital Privacy

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), supported by the Association for Progressive Communications (APC), launched two digital communication initiatives, dComms and DANCIT, to enhance privacy and reduce dependence on major technology companies. Buhari Abba, representing CITAD's Executive Director, Dr Yunusa Zakari Ya’u, announced the initiatives in Bauchi.
The platforms aim to provide Nigerians with alternatives to conventional social media and messaging services, emphasizing decentralization, user control, and digital freedom. Abba highlighted the growing concerns regarding data privacy, surveillance, and algorithmic manipulation associated with mainstream platforms.
He noted that these platforms often lack transparency in data handling and can influence the information users receive. dComms connects to the Fediverse, allowing independent digital platforms to communicate without relying on a single commercial service, thereby promoting community-oriented governance and digital innovation. However, Abba cautioned that decentralization does not automatically mitigate privacy risks or misinformation.
