CITAD Launches One Million-Tree Campaign in Nigeria

The Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) unveiled an online platform to support its campaign to plant one million trees across Northern Nigeria, scheduled from September 2, 2026, to September 1, 2027. Dr. Yunusa Zakari Ya’u, CITAD's Executive Director, emphasized that the initiative aims to mobilize various stakeholders, including communities, government agencies, civil society organizations, schools, and the media, to participate in tree planting and environmental protection.

The platform allows participants to upload details about the trees planted, such as species and locations, facilitating progress monitoring. So far, approximately 200 trees have been planted, correcting an earlier report of 1,000.

A pilot exercise in eight secondary schools taught students tree planting and protection, while 100 trees were planted in Jama’are town during the launch. The campaign addresses concerns over tree loss in Kano and Northern Nigeria, highlighting the environmental benefits of trees and the need to protect indigenous species.

The Kano State Ministry of Environment has provided nearly 1,000 seedlings for distribution.
