Sokoto Launches Campaign to Plant 500,000 Trees

The Sokoto state government has initiated a tree-planting campaign aimed at planting 500,000 seedlings across the state's 23 local government areas. Governor Ahmed Aliyu officially launched the campaign on Tuesday at Gidan Man Ada Housing Estate.

He called on residents to support efforts against desertification, deforestation, and environmental degradation. Aliyu highlighted that the initiative is not just about planting but also about nurturing trees to secure a sustainable future.

He expressed concern over the negative impacts of indiscriminate tree felling and urged local government chairmen to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment for seedling distribution. The governor stressed the need for public awareness on the dangers of tree destruction and emphasized that any tree cut down must be replaced.

He also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's support for the Great Green Wall Initiative, aimed at addressing climate change and desert encroachment. Aliyu encouraged collective action for a greener and healthier community, referencing the religious significance of tree planting.
