Civil Society Group Demands NAFDAC DG's Removal Over Ban

The Concern Citizen Network, a civil society group, has publicly accused Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), of gross incompetence and abuse of office, demanding her immediate removal. During a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the group's president, Ndubuisi Nwogu, criticized NAFDAC's enforcement of a ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET bottle alcohol products, describing the move as illegal, arbitrary, and detrimental to the public.

Nwogu argued that the enforcement contradicts existing provisions of the national alcohol policy approved by the Federal Ministry of Health and violates a presidential directive to halt further regulatory actions pending the outcome of a joint committee review. The group contended that NAFDAC's actions threaten jobs across the alcohol product value chain and could lead to increased circulation of illicit, unregulated alcohol products, potentially resulting in a loss of government revenue.

They asserted that smaller packaging may discourage excessive consumption compared to larger containers and urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act decisively to remove Adeyeye from office.
