CJN and NCC Advocate for Stronger Judicial Role in Telecoms

During a workshop organized by the National Judicial Institute in collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in Lagos, Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Motonmori and NCC's Executive Vice Chairman Aminu Maida called for a stronger judicial role in tackling emerging legal challenges in Nigeria's rapidly growing digital economy. They highlighted the judiciary's necessity to adapt to changes in telecommunications and cybersecurity, as courts increasingly handle cases related to digital communications and cyber-related crimes.

Maida noted that Nigeria's digital economy is expanding significantly, with data consumption reaching 1.42 million terabytes in March 2026, up from 995,000 terabytes in 2025. He warned of vulnerabilities such as vandalism, cybercrime, and identity fraud affecting the telecommunications sector.

The NCC is collaborating with security agencies to combat these issues, and Maida introduced a telecommunications identity risk management system to tackle SIM-related fraud. The workshop aimed to foster engagement between the judiciary, regulatory bodies, and industry stakeholders to develop sound jurisprudence that supports innovation while protecting citizens.
