NCC Advocates for Judicial Partnership to Secure Telecoms

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has urged for enhanced judicial collaboration to safeguard telecommunications infrastructure and combat cybercrime, as Nigeria's digital economy continues to expand rapidly. Speaking at a workshop in Lagos on Thursday, NCC Vice Chairman Aminu Maida highlighted the judiciary's critical role in shaping the future of Nigeria's digital transformation.

He noted that the theme of the workshop focused on adjudicating in the digital era, emphasizing the importance of protecting online safety amid increasing cyber threats. Maida revealed that broadband penetration in Nigeria rose from 47.7% in 2025 to a projected 54.3% in 2026, with data consumption reaching 1.42 million terabytes in March 2026, compared to 995,000 terabytes in March 2025.

Despite these advancements, he warned of vulnerabilities in the sector, including vandalism and theft of telecom infrastructure. The NCC has introduced a telecommunications identity risk management system to address fraud and has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Central Bank of Nigeria to combat electronic fraud linked to phone numbers.
