New $1 Billion Port Project to Boost Lagos Economy

Tokunbo Wahab is leading an environmental initiative with a new $1 billion port project at Snake Island, Lagos, in collaboration with the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and the Chagouri Group. This project involves a 45-year agreement to build and operate a new container terminal designed to increase the capacity of Lagos ports, particularly addressing congestion at Apapa and Tin Island.

The new terminal is expected to handle larger vessels and modern loading equipment, which will help reduce delays and lower import costs, facilitating easier export of Nigerian goods. The federal government anticipates significant revenue from the project over its duration, with estimates running into billions of dollars and the creation of numerous jobs linked to the construction and operation of the port.

MSC has a strong global shipping network, while Chagouri Group has a history of major developments in Nigeria, including the Eko Atlantic project. The success of this initiative will depend on the delivery of consistent and reliable port services, which have struggled with delays in the past.
