WEF Warns 5 Billion People at Risk of Water Shortages by 2050 Due to Climate Change and Urbanization

The World Economic Forum (WEF) report highlights the impending global water crisis driven by climate change and urban expansion. Nearly half of the world's population, 3.6 billion people, currently face severe water shortages, with this number expected to rise to 5 billion by 2050.

Water scarcity is not just an environmental issue but also a major economic threat, potentially reducing global GDP by 31% (equivalent to $70 trillion) by 2050. The report emphasizes the need for innovative water solutions, especially in rapidly growing urban areas where water infrastructure is outdated and fragmented, posing significant risks.

Despite existing water innovations like decentralized treatment technologies and AI-driven leak management, challenges remain in scaling these solutions due to financial constraints and regulatory frameworks.
