Bola Tinubu Announces CNG Cost Reductions Starting October

Nigeria is advancing its initiative to expand compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative transport fuel, with President Bola Tinubu stating that measurable reductions in transportation costs will begin on October 1 under the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme. In an exclusive interview with Nairametrics, alternative fuels development consultant Omid Hamidkhani discussed the essential components for a sustainable CNG market, including the expansion of gas and refueling infrastructure, improved distribution, and robust safety systems.

Hamidkhani noted that while Nigeria has abundant natural gas resources and a significant transportation sector, the success of CNG adoption hinges on a well-coordinated value chain. He emphasized the necessity of government financial incentives to encourage the construction of CNG stations, which require substantial upfront investment.

Targeted incentives could include tax benefits and access to low-cost financing to mitigate investment risks and foster infrastructure development.
