Rising Petrol Prices Boost CNG Adoption in Nigeria

Nigeria is experiencing a renewed push for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) adoption as rising petrol prices compel motorists and transport operators to reconsider fuel options. Chinedu Ukadike, National Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), stated that financial institutions are collaborating with vehicle owners to finance CNG cylinder installations, easing the transition from petrol.

Recent volatility in petrol prices, which surged above ₦1,300 per litre, has increased demand for alternatives like CNG. Paul Anjoma, an independent CNG station operator in Abuja, reported heightened interest from motorists and transport companies seeking to lower fuel costs.

The CNG market's dynamics are closely linked to the price gap between gas and petrol, influencing consumer behavior. President Bola Tinubu initiated the government's CNG drive in August 2023, following the removal of the petrol subsidy, and announced a N100 billion allocation for 3,000 20-seater CNG buses for mass transit.
