Gift Uchenna Advocates for Grassroots Basketball Growth
Gift Uchenna, a 6ft 3in forward from Ebonyi, has been commended by Nigerian basketball coaches for her grassroots basketball initiatives aimed at helping young athletes discover and develop their talents. This recognition occurred during a basketball skills and talent-discovery program in Abuja.
Uchenna currently plays for the University of Wisconsin-Madison women’s basketball team, the Wisconsin Badgers. Coach Lawal M. Daddy emphasized her potential and urged young Nigerians to pursue sports rather than detrimental activities.
He highlighted the essential role of grassroots coaches in talent development despite limited support. Iyiola Okundele, Acting Director of Sports in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), reiterated the administration's commitment to identifying and nurturing sporting talents across various disciplines, not just football.
He announced plans for upgrading sports infrastructure and developing a new sports center in Katampe District. However, Umar Kona, Founder and Coach of Village Bossas Basketball, raised concerns about inadequate government investment in grassroots basketball, noting that many coaches rely on personal passion for player development.
