Coalition Calls for Swift Court Action on Political Parties

A coalition of civil society groups, advocating for peace, security, good governance, equity, and justice, has called on the Federal High Court in Abuja to accelerate the hearing of a suit that seeks judicial interpretation of the continued existence of certain political parties alleged to be redundant. The coalition, represented by its national coordinator Jame Okoronkwo, argues that the suit has significant constitutional implications ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The suit aims to enforce Section 225 of the 1999 Constitution, which pertains to the registration of political parties that have allegedly fallen short of electoral thresholds. The coalition criticized the chairman of the Zenith Labour Party, Dan Nwanyanwu, for making defamatory remarks against the Attorney General of the Federation, who they claim is acting within his constitutional authority.

They emphasized the importance of maintaining electoral integrity and the need for political parties to meet constitutional requirements to avoid overcrowding ballots and voter confusion.
