COAS Shaibu Urges Army Commanders to Enhance Leadership

On Wednesday, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff of the Nigerian Army, addressed senior commanders at the Second Senior Command and Leadership Seminar 2026 held at Headquarters 1 Division Nigerian Army in Kaduna. He emphasized the need for strategic foresight, professional competence, and exemplary leadership to tackle the growing complexities of insecurity in Nigeria, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and cyber threats.

The seminar, themed “Strategic Leadership for Effective Command in an Evolving Security Environment,” aims to enhance leadership capacity and share operational experiences. Shaibu highlighted that military success relies on credibility and public confidence, urging commanders to remain intellectually agile and innovative.

He stressed the importance of the information environment in military operations and directed strict adherence to Rules of Engagement and human rights. Additionally, he discussed the recent expansion of the Nigerian Army’s force structure from eight to twelve divisions, framing it as a significant leadership responsibility for senior commanders.
