APC Governors Clash with Lawmakers Ahead of 2027 Elections

A significant power struggle is developing within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as governors aim to reduce the influence of federal lawmakers in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. Tensions have risen following perceived betrayals related to recent amendments to the electoral act.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu indicated a desire for the return of APC lawmakers to the National Assembly during an interfaith breakfast meeting, which unsettled several governors, particularly those planning to replace federal lawmakers loyal to the party ahead of the elections. Speaker Tajudeen Abba expressed support for the return of lawmakers to the 11th National Assembly, lamenting that 80% of members failed to return, undermining legislative continuity.

The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) plans to meet with Tinubu during his upcoming trip to the United Kingdom, with expectations of discussing major agenda items. The struggle for control over legislative leadership has intensified, particularly in Imo State, where Governor Hope Uzodinma is seen as a potential successor to Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
