Nigerian Colonel Ma’aji Implicated in Foiled Coup Plot Against President Tinubu

Colonel Ma’aji, a Nigerian Army officer, played a strategic role in coordinating logistics and transferring funds to co-plotters in a failed coup plot against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The investigation, initiated in late September 2025, resulted in the arrest of Ma’aji and 15 other officials.

The plot involved senior military figures, leading to the dismissal of key officials, including the replacement of the Chief of Defence Staff. Ma’aji, born in 1976, had a long military career, rising to the rank of Colonel before his arrest.

The investigation also uncovered financial links to Timi Sylva, a former governor of Bayelsa State. Despite denials of involvement, Ma’aji remains under investigation with reports of his emotional detachment and lack of remorse.

The coup plot has raised concerns about civilian involvement and has led to significant changes in the military leadership.
