Army Colonel Identified as Coup Leader in Foiled Plot Against Nigerian President Tinubu

A senior Nigerian Army Colonel has been identified as the alleged mastermind behind a foiled coup plot against President Bola Tinubu's administration. The plot, initially planned for May 29, 2023, was reportedly reactivated in 2025 with close to ₦1 billion linked to a former governor for funding.

The coup involved plans to assassinate Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswil Akpabio, and others. The plot was thwarted through a joint operation by the military and the Department of State Services (DSS) following a whistleblower report.

Several suspects, including the alleged coup leader, were arrested, with some managing to escape and be rearrested. The incident led to the establishment of a special investigative panel chaired by Chief of Defence Intelligence Gen.

Emmanuel Undiandey, resulting in the dismissal of top military officials. The alleged coup leader, a native of Niger State, has denied involvement and remains in custody.
