British Envoy Celebrates Team Nigeria's Commonwealth Success

Richard Montgomery, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, hosted a reception in Abuja on Friday to honor Team Nigeria for their exceptional performance at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Nigeria emerged as the highest-ranked African nation, finishing in the overall top 10 with a total of 24 medals: 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze.

Montgomery praised the athletes, coaches, and officials for their talent, dedication, and resilience, emphasizing the event's role in strengthening UK-Nigeria ties through shared values and Commonwealth connections. The reception was attended by various stakeholders, including athletes, coaches, officials from the National Sports Commission, and representatives of the Nigerian Olympic Committee.

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, expressed national pride in the athletes' achievements and pledged continued support to enhance their performance in future competitions. Aseosa Uwagboe, Head of Communications at the British High Commission, noted the reception's significance in recognizing the Nigerian contingent's distinguished representation.
