British Envoy Praises Nigeria's 24 Medals at Commonwealth Games

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, commended Team Nigeria for its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland.

At a reception in Abuja, he celebrated Nigeria's achievement of winning 24 medals, which included 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze, positioning Nigeria as the highest-ranked African nation and seventh overall among 74 participating countries. Montgomery highlighted the significance of this accomplishment, noting that Nigeria secured 24 out of approximately 200 medals awarded at the Games.

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, expressed gratitude to the British High Commission for its support, particularly for the prompt issuance of visas that facilitated the participation of athletes and officials. Dikko described Nigeria's performance as highly successful, with Nigerian athletes setting three world records during the Games.

The Nigeria Olympic Committee's Deputy Secretary-General, Mohammed Baba Abdullahi, also congratulated the team, while captain Oluwafemi Ayo Fonoshade thanked the British High Commission for its assistance.
