Enekwechi Wins Historic Gold for Nigeria in Shot Put

On Thursday, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win the men’s shot put gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, achieving a championship-winning throw of 21.07m at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland. The Olympic Games confirmed this victory via its X handle, celebrating Enekwechi's success.

The 33-year-old athlete delivered his decisive throw on his penultimate attempt, surpassing the defending champion, Tom Walsh of New Zealand, who had an opening throw of 21.03m. England’s Scott Lincoln secured the bronze medal with a throw of 20.99m.

Enekwechi had previously won a silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and faced disappointment with a fourth-place finish at the Birmingham 2022 edition. His victory at this event marked a significant milestone in his career, adding to his five African titles and contributing to Nigeria's overall medal tally of 15 at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, which includes eight gold, five silver, and two bronze medals.
