Commuters Face Police Extortion and Robbery in Onitsha

Commuters traveling on South-East roads, especially from the Onitsha Bridgehead in Anambra State, have reported rampant police extortion, robbery, and manipulation by commercial vehicle operators. Passengers, including a student named Gracebell, recounted experiences of being robbed while attempting to board vehicles.

Gracebell was robbed of her handbag and phone while navigating unbranded commercial vehicles at a registered park. Another traveler, Uche Michael, shared his ordeal of theft in a motor park in Amansea, Enugu.

Findings indicated that motor parks have become hotspots for thieves posing as bus conductors, leading to increased hardship for travelers. Motorists lamented the incessant extortion at various checkpoints, which has driven up transport fares in the region.

Passengers have called on state governors and security agencies to address these issues, emphasizing the need for better organization in Anambra to prevent criminal activities.
