Iyabo Obasanjo Advocates Consensus for 2027 Elections

Iyabo Obasanjo, a former senator, has expressed her support for a consensus method in selecting candidates for the upcoming 2027 elections, stating that this approach will produce the right candidates rather than opting for unpopular choices. Speaking on Channels Television, she dismissed concerns that consensus might sideline party members, asserting that political parties always consider popular choices to avoid electoral losses.

Obasanjo emphasized that the consensus approach would focus on candidates with actual grassroots support, which is crucial for winning elections. She reiterated her confidence in securing the Ogun governorship ticket, especially following her recent defection from the People's Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Obasanjo, 59, believes that her political experience and her family's support, including that of her father, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, will bolster her candidacy. The APC has confirmed it will adopt a consensus approach for candidate selection during its convention scheduled for March 27-28, 2026, in Abuja.
