Malaria Consortium Seeks Partnership with UCH to Combat Malaria

Dr. Kolawole Maxwell, the West and Central Africa Programmes Director of Malaria Consortium, called for stronger collaboration with the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan to enhance malaria prevention and case management in Nigeria.

This appeal was made during an advocacy visit by the Malaria Consortium Board of Trustees to UCH management. Dr.

Maxwell emphasized the critical role of tertiary health institutions in treating severe malaria and advancing prevention and research. Malaria Consortium, a UK-registered charity, has been active in Nigeria since 2008, managing projects worth over £18 million annually across more than 20 states.

The organization supports the Oyo State Government in implementing Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) in six northern local government areas, targeting regions with high seasonal malaria transmission. Dr.

Maxwell noted that the intervention has significantly reduced malaria cases among children. He stressed that malaria elimination requires multiple interventions as recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
