Malaria Consortium Advocates for UCH Partnership in Nigeria

Dr. Kolawole Maxwell, the West and Central Africa Programmes Director of Malaria Consortium, called for a stronger partnership with the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan to enhance malaria prevention and case management in Nigeria. This appeal was made during an advocacy visit by the Malaria Consortium Board of Trustees to UCH management.

Maxwell emphasized the critical role of tertiary health institutions in treating severe malaria and advancing research and capacity building. He acknowledged UCH's significance as a referral center for complicated malaria cases.

Malaria Consortium, a UK-registered charity, has been active in Nigeria since 2008, managing over £18 million in projects annually across more than 20 states. The organization supports the Oyo State Government in implementing Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention in six local government areas, which has reportedly reduced malaria cases among children.

Maxwell noted that malaria elimination requires multiple interventions as recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
