Contractor Dies in Egbin Power Plant Accident

On April 28, 2026, a contractor tragically died in an accident at Egbin Power PLC, Nigeria's largest electricity generation plant with an installed capacity of 1,320 MW. The incident occurred during underwater maintenance operations inside the plant's lagoon base pump house.

Reports indicate that the contractor, a diver, was engaged in work on the water pump system when an unexpected malfunction caused the pump to trap and impel him, leading to his death. Following the accident, operations at part of the facility were suspended, resulting in a broader shutdown of the plant, which generated zero megawatts on the subsequent days.
