10th Nigerian Senate Passes 100 Bills Amid Controversies

The 10th Nigerian Senate, inaugurated in June 2023 and led by President Godswill Akpabio, has passed 100 bills over three years, with 38 awaiting third reading and 453 having passed second reading. The Senate's activities have sparked intense debate, with citizens expressing concerns that its legislative performance ranks among the worst in Nigeria's parliamentary history.

Despite this, Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele highlighted significant achievements, particularly in economic reform and partnerships with the executive branch, aimed at stabilizing the economy. Notably, the Senate passed four tax reform bills, which received presidential assent from Bola Tinubu, intended to simplify tax administration and enhance government revenue, especially in the non-oil sector.

However, controversies surrounding electoral reforms, particularly regarding electronic transmission of results, continue to dominate discussions, raising questions about the credibility of electoral processes ahead of the 2027 elections.
