Akpabio Defends 10th National Assembly's Legislative Role

On Tuesday, Godswill Akpabio, the President of the Senate, defended the performance of the 10th National Assembly during the 2026 Open Week in Abuja. He challenged critics to study the laws of the National Assembly, emphasizing the parliament's role in supporting national reforms.

Akpabio noted that the legislative process is often misunderstood and urged citizens to engage directly with lawmakers. He referenced recent criticisms of a tax reform bill, stating that some critics had not read the legislation before commenting.

Akpabio highlighted the importance of creating laws that protect Nigeria's future rather than focusing on immediate political gains. He described the current National Assembly as harmonious and a product of collaboration since the return to democratic rule in 1999.

Additionally, Tajudeen Abba, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, presented the third-year scorecard of the 10th House, revealing that lawmakers received 2,747 bills and passed 363, with 72 receiving presidential assent.
