Akpabio's Senate Leadership: Legislative Reforms and Growth

Godswill Akpabio assumed office as President of the Nigerian Senate in June 2023. Over his three-year tenure, he has aimed to position the Senate as a proactive legislative institution addressing Nigeria's economic challenges and public demands.

The Senate has introduced 983 bills and passed 108 laws from June 2023 to June 2025, including 83 bills during the 2024-2025 legislative year. This marks a significant increase in legislative activity compared to the previous assembly.

Akpabio's leadership has prioritized reforms to stimulate economic growth, improve public finance management, and strengthen institutions. Key initiatives include tax reform aimed at increasing Nigeria's tax-to-GDP ratio from 10% in 2023 to approximately 18% by 2027, alongside legislation to enhance access to education and improve the electricity sector.

The Senate is also focused on modernizing tax collection and expanding social protection measures.
