COREN Launches Reforms to Enhance Engineering Standards

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) unveiled significant reforms aimed at strengthening engineering regulation, public safety, and professional standards during its 189th ordinary council meeting. The council approved the establishment of a 90-day engineering regulatory monitoring and enforcement task force to combat quackery and enhance project monitoring to prevent engineering-related failures.

Additionally, COREN will launch a nationwide public awareness campaign to educate Nigerians about the dangers of engaging unregistered engineering practitioners and promote compliance with engineering regulations. The council also approved the establishment of an engineering disciplinary tribunal to address professional misconduct.

Furthermore, COREN registered 3,328 engineering practitioners across various categories and directed a review of existing registration guidelines to align with global best practices. The council reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the engineering profession and reported nine cases involving fraudulent academic certificates to the appropriate anti-corruption authorities for investigation and possible prosecution.
