Inquest into Chimamanda Adichie's Son's Death Begins

The coroner's inquest into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi Eseg, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, began on April 14, 2026. The child was admitted to Atlantic Hospital in Lagos for a medical procedure but subsequently passed away after complications arose during transport to John Hopkins Hospital in the United States.

The parents allege medical negligence and misconduct, claiming that the child suffered severe complications due to improper administration of propofol and wrong diagnoses. The inquest, presided over by Magistrate Atinuk Adetunji, aims to determine the cause of death, with the family planning to call five independent medical professionals as witnesses.

The court has directed that all relevant electronic evidence, including CCTV footage and medical records, be preserved. The next hearing is scheduled for January 10, 2026, following a request from the Attorney General of Lagos State for the inquest to be conducted.
