Vigilantes Beat Corps Member to Death in Benue State

Ben Agir, a member of the National Youth Service Corps, was allegedly beaten to death by members of a local vigilante group in Buruku Local Government Area, Benue State. The incident occurred on Sunday night between 11 PM and midnight at Anibro Settlement during a night patrol operation.

According to local sources, Agir was accosted under suspicion of being involved in motorcycle theft. Raymond Aondoakura, the chairman of Buruku LGA, reported that the incident took place near the local government secretariat.

The vigilante group, upon confronting Agir, began to beat him after he failed to provide satisfactory identification. He was later taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

Following the incident, the local government suspended the activities of the vigilante group pending proper regulation. Veronica Ogwuch, the public relations officer for the National Youth Service Corps in the state, indicated that preliminary information suggested that the deceased was not serving in Benue State but in Gombe State.

Efforts to reach the Benue State police for further comments were unsuccessful.
