Ooni of Ife Defends Optional Membership in Rulers' Council

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, responded to Dr. Lawrence Agubuzu, the Enugu monarch, regarding the Southern Traditional Ruler Council, stating that membership is optional and not mandatory.

During an interview, Ogunwusi emphasized that the council should not be perceived as a divisive force among traditional institutions. He highlighted the importance of unity among traditional rulers across southern Nigeria and expressed support for President Tinubu, urging him to listen to the concerns of the traditional rulers.

Ogunwusi also mentioned that the council aims to advance the interests of southern Nigeria and is recognized by the federal government. Agubuzu had previously argued for the council's necessity in addressing issues affecting the region, but Ogunwusi clarified that participation is voluntary and that the council's formation is not intended to impose restrictions on traditional rulers.

The discussion took place during a health summit in Abuja, where traditional leaders gathered to address various issues.
