Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council Faces Unity Challenges

On February 17, 2024, the Southern Nigeria Traditional Rulers Council held a health summit in Abuja, attended by President Tinubu and various traditional leaders, including Reverend Ez Ogbunaechendo and former chairman of the Enugu State South East Council of Traditional Rulers. The summit highlighted the council's struggle for unity and legitimacy, as concerns were raised about its effectiveness beyond ceremonial roles.

Governor Hope Uzodinma emphasized the need for collaboration with northern counterparts to support President Tinubu. The council's leadership includes Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi as chairman and Cletu Ilomuanya and Jaja Opobo as co-chairmen.

However, the absence of several traditional rulers raised questions about the council's inclusivity and the legitimacy of its representation. Elder Statesman Igw Ambassador Loc Agubuzu warned against individuals claiming to represent the council without broad consent, emphasizing the importance of democratic representation and the need for unity among southern traditional leaders.
