Nigerian Security Agencies Arrest 40 Over Alleged Coup Plot to Overthrow President Tinubu

Nigerian security agencies have apprehended 40 individuals suspected of planning a coup to overthrow President Bola Tinubu. The group, comprising current and retired military personnel, police officers, and civilians, aimed to violently remove Tinubu from office.

Investigations revealed a complex network involving intelligence gathering, funding, logistics, and public messaging. The plot allegedly targeted disrupting the power transition from former President Muhammadu Buhari to Tinubu in 2023.

Notably, the plan was temporarily halted due to financial constraints and weak logistics but was intended to be revived in 2025. The suspects, including former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva, are linked to a significant amount of money moved through multiple bank accounts.

Some suspects, like retired General Adamu and others, are believed to have provided financial backing to the coup plotters. Efforts are ongoing to dismantle any remaining cells connected to the alleged plot.
