Court Clears Goodluck Jonathan for 2027 Presidential Run

On Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that former President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election. The court dismissed a suit filed by Johnmari Jideobi, which sought to prevent Jonathan from running, stating that Jideobi lacked legal standing and had not suffered any loss due to Jonathan's intent to vie for the presidency.

Justice Peter Lifu emphasized that the matter had already been adjudicated by an appeal court, which had previously ruled on Jonathan's eligibility. The court described Jideobi's suit as an abuse of court process and a waste of judicial resources.

Additionally, the court imposed a fine of N20 million against Jideobi and an equal amount in favor of the Attorney General of the Federation. The ruling was welcomed by the PDP faction led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, who stated that it clears the path for Jonathan's presidential ambitions.

The PDP plans to hold its primary elections on May 28, 2026.
