Court Denies Bail to Man Planning School Attacks in Abuja

On September 24, 2023, Justice Joyc Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja denied bail to John Jude Agbo, who was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly planning multiple attacks on schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The prosecution presented four witnesses and closed its case against Agbo, who faces charges related to terrorism and cybercrime.

The judge ruled that there was no evidence to suggest that Agbo would not abscond if granted bail. The court ordered his remand in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

During the proceedings, a DSS officer testified that Agbo collaborated with others and analyzed messages sent to schools regarding the planned attacks. Audio-visual recordings of Agbo's interview, where he admitted to the allegations, were presented as evidence in open court.

The judge adjourned the matter until September 24 for Agbo to open his defense.
